Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀳𑀼𑀡 (pahuṇa), 𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀼𑀡 (pāhuṇa), from Sanskrit प्राहुण (prāhuṇa) (compare प्राघुण (prāghuṇa), प्राघुर्ण (prāghurṇa)). Cognate with Gujarati પરોણો (paroṇo), Punjabi ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ (parāhuṇā), Marathi पाहुणा (pāhuṇā), Nepali पाहुना (pāhunā), Odia ପହନା (pahanā).
