    Inherited from Old Hindi पहरना (paharanā), from Prakrit 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀭𑀇 (pahiraï), undergoing metathesis from 𑀧𑀭𑀺𑀳𑀇 (parihaï), from Sanskrit परि॑दधाति (páridadhāti, to set round, put on clothes). Likely influenced the form of पहनना (pahannā, to wear), which is dominant in Modern Standard Hindi.
