Etymology

[edit]

From older पहिनना (pahinnā), a metathesis of Old Hindi पिन्हना (pinhanā), from Prakrit *पिणहइ (piṇahaï), from Sanskrit पिनह्यति (pinahyati, wears, ties on, fastens). Related to पनही (panhī, shoe). Cognate with Punjabi ਪਹਿਨਣਾ (pahinṇā). Compare attested पिणद्ध (piṇaddha, worn) and पिणद्धइ (piṇaddhaï, wears), from Sanskrit पिनद्ध (pinaddha, worn).

A similar metathesis occurred in words derived from the Sanskrit root परिधा (paridhā, sets, wears) of similar meaning—confer Prakrit परिहइ (parihaï), पहिरइ (pahiraï, wears), and पहिरिय (pahiriya, clothed), giving Hindi पहरना (paharnā, to wear) and पहराना (pahrānā, to clothe).
