[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)ni-Hč-ás, from the root *(H)niHanč- (whence also Avestan 𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬃𐬧𐬗- (niiā̊ṇc-, “going downwards”, adjective)) from *ní + Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk-.
