Etymology

The verb is inherited from Prakrit 𑀥𑀭𑀇 (dharaï), from Sanskrit धरति (dharati), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer- (to hold) (Sanskrit धृ (dhṛ, to bear))

The noun is from the same root, through Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀥𑀭𑀡 (dharaṇa), from Sanskrit धरण (dharaṇa, bearing).
