Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁂𑀤𑀺 (piṭṭedi), from Sanskrit पिट्टयति (piṭṭayati, stamps into a solid mass). Cognate with Nepali पिट्नु (piṭnu), Marathi पिटणे (piṭṇe), Gujarati પીટવું (pīṭvũ), Assamese পিট (pit), and Bengali পিটা (piṭa).
