Etymology

[edit]

Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit त्यजति (tyájati), from the root त्यज् (tyaj, to leave, abandon). The verb is not an inherited word, as intial त्य- (tya-) would change to च- (ca-) (compare, for example, Hindi नाच (nāc), inherited from Sanskrit नृत्य (nṛtya) and Prakrit 𑀘𑀬𑀇 (cayaï), which comes from त्यजति (tyájati)).
