Etymology

A variant of Old Hindi चमगीदड़ (camagīdaṛa, “flying fox, bat”). In Middle Indo-Aryan, there are several constructions meaning "bat" starting with Prakrit 𑀘𑀫𑁆𑀫- (camma-) / Sanskrit चर्म- (carma-), like Sanskrit चर्मचटक (carmacaṭaka, “bat”) (with चटक (caṭaka, “sparrow”)), 𑀘𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (cammapakkhi) (with 𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (pakkhi, “bird”)), and 𑀘𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀺𑀮 (cammaṭṭhila). This word is from an unattested variant with the suffix *𑀕𑀺𑀤𑁆𑀤 (*gidda, “jackal, fox”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-), whence गीदड़ (gīdaṛ, “jackal”). Cognate with Punjabi ਚਮਗਿੱਦੜ (camgiddaṛ). Related to Gujarati ચામાચીડિયું (cāmācīḍiyũ).
