[edit]Inherited from Prakrit *𑀕𑀺𑀤𑁆𑀤 (*gidda, “jackal”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-), with further etymology unknown. This Prakrit root is probably one of a family of roots referring to scavenging animals, such as Sanskrit गृध्र (gṛdhra, “vulture”). Cognate with Punjabi ਗਿੱਦੜ (giddaṛ).
