      From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás (house), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰ-ó-s, from *gʰerdʰ- (enclosure). Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬜𐬀 (gərəδa), Old Church Slavonic градъ (gradŭ, city), English yard.
