Etymology

    Inherited from Old Hindi गमाना (gamānā), गमांना (gamāṃnā),[1] from Prakrit 𑀕𑀫𑀸𑀯𑀇 (gamāvaï), a causative verb from 𑀕𑀫𑁂𑀇 (gamei, to go away) (whence Old Hindi गमना (gamanā), गंमना (gaṃmanā, to go away, be lost)), from Sanskrit ग॒मय॑ति (gamáyati, to cause to go).[2]

    Cognate with Punjabi ਗੁਆਉਣਾ (guāuṇā) / گُوآؤنا (gūā'onā), Gujarati ગુમાવવું (gumāvvũ), Marathi गमावणे (gamāvṇe).
