Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑀺𑀮𑀢𑀺 (*khilati), *𑀔𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀢𑀺 (*khillati), from a family of Prakrit words with "open up, expand" meanings related to Sanskrit खेटित (kheṭita, ploughed). Cognate with Gujarati ખીલવું (khīlvũ).
