Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hangúštʰas (“thumb, big toe”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (“joint”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬀 (aṇgušta), Middle Persian ʾngwst' (angust) (whence Persian انگشت (angošt)). Also related to अङ्गुरि (aṅgúri), अङ्गुलि (aṅgúli), अङ्ग (aṅgá).
