Etymology
[edit]Literally, “peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكِ (as-salāmu ʕalayki) and Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלַיִךְ (shalóm aláyikh).

Usage notes
[edit]- This term is used when said to a single female.
- For some speakers, this term is fairly formal, in everyday speech often replaced with the shorter ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā).
- The typical response is ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ (bšaynā, literally “in peace”) or ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ ܓܵܘܵܟ݂ܝ (bšaynā gāwāḵ, literally “in peace among you”).
