Etymology
[edit]Literally, “peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ (as-salāmu ʕalayka), Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלֶיךָ (shalóm alékha), and Classical Syriac ܫܵܠܡ ܠܵܟ݂.

- For some speakers, this term is fairly formal, in everyday speech often replaced with the shorter ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā).
- The typical response is ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ (bšaynā, literally “in peace”) or ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ ܓܲܘܘܿܟ݂ (bšaynā gawōḵ, literally “in peace among you”)
