Etymology

Literally, “peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ (as-salāmu ʕalayka), Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלֶיךָ (shalóm alékha), and Classical Syriac ܫܵܠܡ ܠܵܟ݂.
