Etymology
[edit]Literally, “Peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (as-salāmu ʕalaykum) and Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם (shalóm aleikhém).

- For some speakers, this term is fairly formal, in everyday speech often replaced with the shorter ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā).
- The traditional response is ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ (bšaynā, literally “in peace”) or ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ ܓܲܘܟ݂ܘܿܢ (bšaynā gawḵōn).
