From Aramaic מְדִינְתָּא (məḏīntā), derived from the same root of דָּן (dān, “to judge”), denoting the place where judgement takes place; compare Turoyo ܡܕ݂ܝܬ݂ܐ (mḏiṯo) and also borrowed into Arabic مَدِينَة (madīna, “city”) and Hebrew מְדִינָה (m'diná, “state”).
