Ultimately derived from Phoenician 𐤋𐤌𐤃 (lmd, literally goad) through Classical Syriac; compare Hebrew לָמֶד (lámed), Arabic لَام (lām) and Ancient Greek λᾰ́βδᾰ (lắbdă).
