Etymology
[edit]From Aramaic כַּלְּתָא (kalləṯā); related to Hebrew כַּלָּה (kalá) and Arabic كَنَّة (kanna). For the alternative form without /t/ compare Turoyo ܟܰܠܘ (kalu, “bride, daughter in-law”).

[edit]ܟܲܠܬܵܐ • (kaltā) f sg (plural ܟܲܠܵܬܹ̈ܐ (kallātē), masculine ܚܸܬܢܵܐ (ḥitnā))
- bride (woman in the context of her own wedding)
- daughter-in-law (wife of one's child)
- brother’s wife
- Synonym: ܒܲܟ݂ܬ ܐܲܚܵܐ (baḵt aḥḥā)
Usage notes
[edit]Although most dialects use only the alternative form ܟܵܠܘܿ (kālō), some dialects that use both may reserve the alternative form for bride.
