Inherited from Aramaic חַילָא (ḥaylā); compare Arabic حَوْل (ḥawl) and Hebrew חַיִל (kháyil) with the sense of “miracle” a semantic loan from Ancient Greek δύναμις (dúnamis). In some dialects influenced by Classical Syriac, hence /ḥ/.
