ܚܒܛ

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]
Root
ܚ ܒ ܛ (ḥ b ṭ)
2 terms

Inherited from Aramaic חְבַט (ḥəḇaṭ, to beat downward), from Proto-Semitic *habat; compare Hebrew חָבַט (khavát, to hit, strike), Arabic هَبَتَ (habata) and Akkadian 𒄢 (abātum). The changing in meaning from “to beat” into “to mix” is also seen in Neo-Mandaic and loaned into Iraqi Arabic, showing that this was an ancient shift in ancient Eastern Aramaic. Compare however ܚܲܒܘܿܛܵܐ (ḥabōṭā, crutch) pertaining to the original meaning.
