Related to Aramaic אַבָּא (ʾabbā), from Proto-Semitic *ʔabw-, also found in Classical Syriac ܒܵܒܵܐ (bābā); compare Arabic بَابَا (bābā), Hebrew אַבָּא (ába). Doublet of ܐܲܒ݂ܵܐ (aḇā)

In some dialects, the plural ܒܵܒ̈ܲܘܵܬ݂ܵܐ (bābawwāṯā) is reserved for the sense of forefathers, while the plural ܒܵܒܹ̈ܐ (bābē) is used for the sense of fathers.
