ܐܢܬܬܐ
Appearance
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Re-introduced and based on a learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Aramaic אִנְתְּתָא (ʾintəṯā), from Proto-Semitic *anṯat-; compare Turoyo ܐܰܬ݂ܬܐ (aṯto), Arabic أُنْثَى (ʔunṯā), Hebrew אִשָּׁה (ishá), Akkadian 𒁮 (DAM /aššatu/), and Ugaritic 𐎀𐎘𐎚 (ʾaṯt). Displaced completely by ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (baḵtā).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]ܐܲܢ݇ܬܬ݂ܵܐ • (atṯā) f (plural ܢܸܫܹ̈ܐ (niššē) or ܐܸܢ̈ܫܹܐ (inšē), masculine ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (gaḇrā))
Usage notes
[edit]The plural form ܢܸܫܹ̈ܐ (niššē) or a variant is still common in many dialects.
