Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yara (wound), perhaps a derivation from *yār- (to split), whence یارمق (yarmak, to split). Cognate with Azerbaijani yara, Bashkir яра (yara), Kazakh жара (jara), Kyrgyz жара (jara), Turkmen ýara, Uyghur يارا (yara) and Uzbek yara.
