Etymology 1

From the root of یاور (yâvar) (Avestan 𐬰𐬁𐬬𐬀𐬭 (zāvar, “strength, power”)), according to Pokorny (1959, p. 399, s.v. "ĝeu-") from the same Indo-Iranian root as Sanskrit जु (ju, “be quick, hurry”) (see Avestan 𐬰𐬆𐬬𐬍𐬱𐬙𐬫𐬀 (zəvīštya, “the quickest”), زود (zud, “quick, rapid”)).

In New Persian, it contracted to yâr, with semantic shift to “[military] force, support; helper, assistant; friend”. The vocative via addition of a particle â; the new verbal noun via the renewed derivation from the verb یارستن (yârastan, “have power, be able, be capable”).
