Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish چِیزْمَكْ (çizmäk), from Proto-Turkic *čïŕ- (to scratch, draw). Cognate with Azerbaijani cızmaq, Bashkir һыҙыу (hıźıw), Chuvash чӗрме (čĕrme), Kyrgyz сызуу (sızuu), Turkmen çyzmak, Uyghur سىزماق (sizmaq) and Uzbek chizmoq.
