Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *pari-yāhana-,[1] from Proto-Iranian *pari- (“around, peri-”) + *yaHh- (“to girdle, gird”). The former prefix is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pári, from Proto-Indo-European *péri, while the latter component is from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s- (“to gird”), and cognate with Ancient Greek ζώννυμι (zṓnnumi, “to gird”) and ζώνη (zṓnē, “belt, sash”) (whence English zone), Lithuanian júosta (“band, stripe”), Proto-Slavic *pȍjāsъ (“girdle”), and Albanian gjesh (“to gird”).[2]
