[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s- + -νῡμι (-nūmi), related to Lithuanian júosta (“girdle”), Latvian jôsta (“girdle”), Avestan 𐬫𐬁𐬵- (yāh-, “girdle”), 𐬫𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬀 (yāsta, “girdled”), Albanian gjesh (“to gird”). See also ζώνη (zṓnē).
