Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀮 (pattala, thin), from Sanskrit पत्त्रल (pattralá, leafy). Cognate with Gujarati પાતળું (pātaḷũ), Marathi पातळ (pātaḷ), Odia ପାତଳ (pātaḷa), Bengali পাতলা (patola), Assamese পাতল (patol).
