[edit]From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾk' /pāk/, “clean, pure, holy”), from Proto-Iranian *pawHākáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pawHākás, from Proto-Indo-European *pewH- (“to cleanse, purify”). Cognate with Sanskrit पावक (pāvaká, “pure, clean, clear”), Latin purus.
