From Middle Persian pʾlwtn' (pālūdan, to strain, filter, purify), from Proto-Iranian *para-dā́wati, from Proto-Iranian *dā́wati (to run),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰā́wati (to run), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰew- (to run, flow). Compare Persian دویدن (to run), Sanskrit धावति (dhā́vati) and Ancient Greek θέω (théō).
