[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾnwš /anōš/, “elixir, antidote”, literally “immortal”), from Proto-Iranian *an-auša- (“immortal”), from *an- (“not, a-”) + *auša- (“destruction”), the latter from Proto-Iranian *Hawš (“to burn”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ews- (“to burn”).[1][2] Related to Old Armenian անոյշ (anoyš), an Iranian borrowing. Cognate with Parthian 𐫀𐫗𐫇𐫢 (ʾnwš /anōš/, “immortal”), Ossetian ӕнус (ænus, “eternity; century; age”) and Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (anaoša, “immortal”).
