[edit]From Proto-Iranian *an-auša- (“immortal”). Cognate with Persian نوش (nôš, “elixir of immortality”), Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (anaoša, “immortal”), Old Armenian borrowings անոյշ (anoyš, “sweet”), անուշակ (anušak).
