Etymology 1

    From earlier ناوخدا (nâvxodâ), compound of ناو (nâv, boat, ship) +‎ خدا (xodâ, master, lord, chief). Compare Ancient Greek ναύκληρος (naúklēros), Latin nauclērus for the formation.
