Etymology
[edit]Tool noun from the root ج ن ن (j n n). Cognate to Classical Syriac ܡܓܶܢܳܐ (məgennā, “shield”), Phoenician 𐤌𐤂𐤍 (mgn, “shield”), and Hebrew מָגֵן (māgén, “shield”).

- لَمْ تُقْطَعْ يَدُ سَارِقٍ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّٰهِ —صَلَّى اللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ— فِي أَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَمَنِ الْمِجَنِّ حَجَفَةٍ أَوْ تُرْسٍ وَكِلَاهُمَا ذُو ثَمَنٍ.
- lam tuqṭaʕ yadu sāriqin fī ʕahdi rasūli llāhi —ṣallā llāhu ʕalayhi wasallama— fī ʔaqalla min ṯamani al-mijanni ḥajafatin ʔaw tursin wakilāhumā ḏū ṯamanin.
- During the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), the hand of a thief was not cut off for less than the price of a shield, skin-shield or scutum, and both of them are valuable.
