Etymology
[edit]Derived from the active participle of آنَسَ (ʔānasa). The weekday apparently derives from the circumstance that in antiquity it was a hustle and bustle amusement day before the main day of religion عَرُوبَة (ʕarūba), later الْجُمْعَة (al-jumʕa). Compare الْمُشْتَرِي (al-muštarī, “the supplier”) for the planet Jupiter and Latin diēs Iovis naming the same day after the god Jupiter.
