Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish قَازْمَقْ (qazmaq), from Proto-Turkic *kaŕ- (to dig). Cognate with Azerbaijani qazmaq, Bashkir ҡазыу (qazıw), Kazakh қазу (qazu), Kyrgyz казуу (kazuu), Turkmen gazmak, Uzbek qozmoq and Yakut хас (qas).
