Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tutġak (anything that holds),[1] a development of *tut- (to grasp), whence طوتمق (tutmak, to hold, grasp). Compare the similar formation *tutka (handle), found in Bashkir тотҡа (totqa), Kazakh тұтқа (tūtqa), Kyrgyz тутка (tutka), Uyghur تۇتقا (tutqa) and Uzbek tutqa.

  1. handle, the part of an object which is held in the hand when used or moved
    Synonyms: صاپ (sap), قولپ (kulp)
  2. holder, anything that holds, such as an umbrella-holder, a lampholder, etc.
