Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (dstydʾl /⁠dastyār⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *dasta-dāra- (literally “one who holds the hand”), cf. modern دست (dast, “hand”), دار (dâr, “to have”). Compare Manichaean Parthian dstdʾr (dstdʾr) and Old Armenian դաստիարակ (dastiarak); an Iranian borrowing.
