Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (dstydʾl /⁠dastyār⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *dasta-dāra- (literally one who holds the hand), cf. modern دست (dast, hand), دار (dâr, to have). Compare Manichaean Parthian dstdʾr (dstdʾr) and Old Armenian դաստիարակ (dastiarak); an Iranian borrowing.
