Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀚𑀸𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀤𑀺 (*jāccadi), *𑀚𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀤𑀺 (*jaccadi), from Sanskrit याच्यते (yācyate, “to be asked”). Cognate with Nepali जाँच्नु (jā̃cnu).
