Cognate to Classical Syriac ܒܒܪܐ (bbrʾ) and cognate to Akkadian 𒌨𒁇𒊏 (barbarum, wolf), likely an early Semitic loan from Sumerian 𒌨𒁇𒊏 (urbarak, literally outsider dog).
