Etymology
[edit]According to Nishanyan, a vulgarized form of Persian پهلوان (pahlevân, “hero, paladin; wrestler”), but compare Crimean Tatar balaban, Karaim балабан and Urum балабан. Doublet of پهلوان (pehlivân, “oil wrestler”).
