[edit]Inherited from Classical Latin īre, infinitive of eō, from Proto-Italic *eō, from earlier *ejō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éyti (“to be going”), athematic root present of *h₁ey- (“to go”). Compare Italian gire.
