Etymology

[edit]

Old Armenian փաղփաղիմ (pʻałpʻałim) and the synonymous փողփողիմ (pʻołpʻołim) are usually said to be a reduplication of *փաղ- (*pʻał-) and *փող- (*pʻoł-) respectively, by-forms of փայլ (pʻayl), all supposedly inherited from Proto-Indo-European.[1][2][3][4][5] Compare however Laz ჶარჶალაჲ (farfalay) and Italian barbagliare.
