[edit]From ჶარჶალ- (farfal-) + -აჲ (-ay). Akin to Laz ფარფალაფს (parpalaps, “to flicker, blaze”), Arkabi Laz ჶარჶალუმს (farfalums, “to flick; to light”), and Mingrelian ფარფალი (parpali). Note also Old Armenian փաղփաղիմ (pʻałpʻałim).
