Etymology

From Middle Iranian *sārawart(i), from Old Iranian *sāravarti- (headcover), from Proto-Iranian *sār- (head) (whence Persian سر (sar)) and *var- (to cover) (whence վարտիք (vartikʻ)). Compare Classical Syriac ܣܢܘܪܬܐ (sanwartā), an Iranian loanword.
