Etymology
[edit]From Middle Iranian *sārawart(i), from Old Iranian *sāravarti- (“headcover”), from Proto-Iranian *sār- (“head”) (whence Persian سر (sar)) and *var- (“to cover”) (whence վարտիք (vartikʻ)). Compare Classical Syriac ܣܢܘܪܬܐ (sanwartā), an Iranian loanword.
