Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From *պարշտեմ (*parštem), from *պարիշտեմ (*parištem), from *պարիշտ (*parišt), from Parthian *parišt-, from Iranian *pari-štā- (literally standing around). Compare Middle Persian plst- (parist-), plstytn' (paristīdan, to serve; to minister in a ritual; to worship), Persian پرستـ (parast-), پرستیدن (parastidan, to worship). The earlier form *պարիշտ (*parišt) survives in compounds: բարեպարիշտ (bareparišt), կռապարիշտ (kṙaparišt), ամբարիշտ (ambarišt), etc. See also պաշտօն (paštōn).
