Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *շող (*šoł, “slime, mucus”) + -իք (-ikʻ). The root *շող (*šoł), of uncertain origin, is also found in dialectal շողուկ (šoġuk), շողոտ (šoġot), and is usually connected with շաղ (šał), շաղեմ (šałem), շաղախ (šałax).
Perhaps a Zan borrowing: compare the Laz and Mingrelian descendants of Proto-Georgian-Zan *s₁owl- (“to wet, make wet”).[1]
