[edit]Inherited from a zero-grade formation of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰolgʰ-, but Armenian points to *ǵʰolg-. Cognate with Lithuanian žalgà (“long, thin stake”), Proto-Germanic *galgô. See also ձաղտել (jaġtel).
