Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (“old woman, ancestor”). Cognates include Latin anus (“old woman”), Ancient Greek ἀννίς (annís, “grandmother”), Lithuanian anyta (“mother-in-law”), Hittite [script needed] (ḫanna-, “grandmother”). The by-form հանի (hani) may derive from *h₂en-ih₂ equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- with the feminine suffix *-ih₂.
